SMT Board Members

Lawrence is an Internal Audit and Risk Assurance specialist with substantial and varied public and private sector experience, able to identify opportunities and add value by providing effective solutions to business challenges, whilst providing risk evaluation and assurance opinion on Control, Compliance, Effective Value and Corporate Governance at Board level.

Lawrence joined the SMT in 2014 as a volunteer with specific interest in social history and railways and joined the Board on November 2015.

Coming to Scarborough some 30 years ago to head up Internal Audit and Risk Management at Scarborough Building Society, he was also a governor at Yorkshire Coast College being both Chair of the Audit Committee and Vice Chair of the Corporation. Later moving into the public sector specifically in the NHS and education (higher and further sectors), which he found immensely interesting. He has also lectured and facilitated in Business Management at a professional level.

Completing the Open University Humanities foundation course cemented his interest in the arts and museums.

A Leeds born Chartered Accountant, John left KPMG for a career in industry, with financial roles at Joseph Terry, Rowntree Mackintosh (now Nestle) before moving to the Yorkshire coast to join Dale Electric before concluding his full time carrier as Group Financial Director of GA Pindar & Son Ltd.

Whilst more-or-less retired, he continues to work on a very part time basis but is mostly involved in pro bono roles, which include being on the Boards of St Catherine’s Hospice and Stephen Joseph Theatre, Rotary Club Treasurer and a Trustee of Scarborough Hospital League of Friends. Past roles include being President of the Humberside District of Chartered Accountants.

Michael studied education at Birmingham and Aston University and has spent the majority of his career in education. He is probably most known as the Headteacher for Raincliffe School (1990 – 2004). Since his ‘retirement’ he has played a key role in various organisations including: The North York Moors Historical Railway Trust, The Advocacy Alliance and Scarborough Rotary Club.

He still plays an active role in education as a Governor at Scalby School and part time consultant to the Specialist Schools Trust. In addition Michael sits on various committee’s at Scarborough Borough Council and North Yorkshire County Council.
